Learn More: Submitting a Photograph

What does this mean?

Image Tips

Preferred Resolution: 72 dpi
Preferred Size: 640 x 480 pixels
Preferred File format: JPEG (.jpg)

All photos submitted through the Atlas photo submission form are resized and made available for download by all Atlas users. The submission form includes an option to allow users to use the submitted photo in print publications according to the disclaimer on each photo page. Any person who wants to use an image in print publications must first submit a photo use request. A photo use request will be denied if the photo requested has been marked as not allowed for print in publications.

Important Tips:

  • If you are submitting photographs taken with a 3.2 mega-pixel digital camera (or higher), please be sure the file size is no larger than 1 MB.
  • If you are scanning historic or other images of significant cultural value, please be sure to scan the photograph at high-resolution (depending on the settings of your scanner) so that we can archive the image.
  • If you have a large collection of photographs, please use the contact form on the Atlas to tell us about your collection. We can probably arrange for someone to help you make your collection available to the public.
  • JPEG is the preferred file format for Atlas photographs. Almost all scanning and image editing software will allow you to save a picture in JPEG format. Simply go to the File menu at the top of the screen and choose "Save As". The computer will ask you where you want to save the file and what you want to call it. In the same screen, before you save the photograph, there should be a drop-down menu labeled, "Save as type," "Format," or something similar. You should be able to choose "JPEG" or "JPG" format from that drop-down menu.
